Mental Health

According to the World Health Organization, mental health requires not only the absence of a mental disorder, but it is defined as a state of emotional well-being, where man can live and work comfortably within the community and be satisfied with his / her personal achievements.

The individual understands his abilities and potential, can cope with the stress of everyday life, work productively and creatively and is able to contribute to the broader group he/she belongs to. Emphasis is placed on the functionality of the individual in his / her wider social environment through coexistence and cooperation with other people, as his / her mental health depends to a great extent on the way he / she is related to other people.

Over one third of people in most countries report problems that match the criteria for diagnosing at least one of the most common mental disorders at some stage of their lives (WHO, 2000).

It is very important to understand that our ability to gain pleasure and satisfaction from the environment helps us to maintain both our mental balance and our physical health two of the necessary components to have a good quality of life. After all it is not accidentally included in the WHO’s definition of health, where: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not just a lack of illness or disability."
